Philosophy of Vedic Astrology and Swami's devine horoscope
                                                 By Acharya Sethumadhavan

Vedas are considered to be the basic scriptures as per the ancient Hindu dharma. Rk,yajus,Sama and Adharva are the four Vedas. There are 6 subsections (Angas) to Vedas viz. Siksha, Kalpam,Niruktam, chandas,Vyakarana & Jyotisham. Of these, Rishis have assigned more importance to Niruktam, Vyakaranam & Jyothisham. It was declared by Rishis that Jyothisha is the "Netra of Vedas" ( Eye of Vedas) . Etymologically Netra is for beholding/ seeing only. Our Rishis have viewed this sub branch of Vedas as a tool to watch the nature of human life, karmic law and fruits of action too.
Rishis have observed that actions of human being, if it is physically, verbally or even mentally are subject to reactions and the same are reflected over a period of time as they are cyclic in nature. Observing this phenomenon, the Rishis developed a scientific basis to explain this sasthra and made it as a branch of Vedas which functions as Eye of Vedas. They got revealed through penance that human mind, body and gross nature (Stula prapancha) are subject to a systematic flow and is based on certain causes and reasons. It was also revealed to them that the cyclic changes are being taken place with regular intervals and equations. Accordingly they developed strong theoretical base and introduced formulae and presented the same to the world. This is how the mathematical part of Astrology has been framed. This is called Astronomy which forms first half of Jyothisham(astrology). This astrological portion has been accepted world wide as it can accurately determine the events and occurrences including Solar/Lunar eclipses.
The other half of astrology is called 'Hora' which is derived from the Sankrit word 'Ahoratram' meaning day and night. But it implies dual and opposite nature of human life too. Observing the dual aspect like pleasure & sorrow, victory and defeat, the saints investigated further into the subject and revealed to the world the subtle nature of the lthe beings. This is called Hora. Samhita and Hora are videly used by astrologers, (however its applications are mostly restricted to Brihadjathakam only). Thus, it can be concluded that the present form of Jyothisha sastra is formed as an integration of astronomy, Hora and samhita with a view to make the world aware of the law of karma. Though astrology stands for this higher purport, astrologers of this age are found not attaching much importance of this and instead run only a bread earning profession which has resulted in lack of observation, analytical skill and hence carry the concept where only speculations and dogmas prevail. It is evident that if properly applied and studied and interpreted scientifically as envisaged by Rishis, indeed astrology will help to understand the subtle nature of human life, reasons and causes of action and reactions.
Navagrahas – Rishis indicate that Sun the 1st planet of Navagrahas is symbolized for the self knowledge (Atma gnana) and also embodiment of sacrifice and social commitment. Needless to say that person with powerful Sun will have more social commitments and carryout many welfare activities in the society. Moon (Chandra) represents mind. Mars(Kuja) symbolizes worldly emotions and passions. It also shows rajasic nature like courage, fighting skills etc. Mercury(Budha) stands for intelligence and knowledge. Jupiter (Guru) represents spirituality. It indicates ones sadhana and spiritual power. Venus(Sukra) represents wordly desires, tastes of creativity and cupidity also. Saturn(shani) is the indicator of renunciation(Sanyasa). North Lunar node (Rahu) is considered to be the cause for 'Amritha visha'. It is surprising that quite a number of astrologers merely treat this as ordinary snake and venom. On the other hand it is to be viewed as a strong indicator of power of Kundalini which takes one to the immortality (Amrithathwa). The South lunar node ( Ketu) shows Liberation (Moksha). Thus it is evident that study of the planets (Navagrahas) reveals the total nature and qualities of a person.
Based on the above astrological concepts, now let us try to have a short look into the position of planets of Bhagawan Sri Sathya sai baba who have revolutionized the world with his spiritual power , unique service activities and paving excellent educational system for the future generation. Needless to say that it might not be possible for any expert to analyse the horoscope of Bhagawan, it would be a blessing from swami if our reading could augment the findings of ancient rishis as a contemporary proof.
Bhagawan Baba was born on 23rd November 1926 at 5 Hrs 6 minuts at Puttaparthi on star Ardra. The birth lagna is Thula rasi. In 2nd house (Bhava), placed Sun,Saturn,Mercury and Venus. 3rd house is Ketu and in 4th Jupiter,7th house mars and 9th house Moon, rahu and Gulika.
As regards Lagna of Thula, saints have observed that it is for renunciants. A number of Sadhus and sanyasins were born to this lagna only. Thula is considered to be the powerful position of Saturn which causes renunciation. In fact the Shani dasa and its 'sufferings' are for purification of a person and is an indicator of path of renunciation. It can be observed that the influence of satrun is very strong in all saints and renunciants like Vivekananda, Ramakrishna paramahamsa, Dayanandasaraswati, Aurobindo, Narayanaguru, Sivananda sawarsati. Among these, planetary position of Bhagawan baba is unique and stands apart. Though Saturn which is the cause for renunciation is generally seen in Lagna (Ascentant), in the case of Bhagawan the same is shown joined in the house of Lagnapathi (ascending planet). Baba has not initiated any disciples…instead, taught the spiritual truths to the whole world and transformed it into actions so that the world is benefited materially as well as spiritually fulfilling and realising the purpose of life. The Saturn,Mercury and venus which are in the 2nd house confirm the same. Service to mankind is the moto of Bhagawan. Many of the astrologers state that in Babas horoscope, Jupiter is seen in Neecha rasi ie. in Makara rasi (Capricorn) is not favourable. But it can be observed that this rasi actually stands for removing the obstacles ( Neecha bhangam) and makes the horoscope of Bhagawan outstanding. It can be proven from the history that after lord Buddha, the only person found to be possessed thus quality is Sri Sathya sai baba. However the important difference which can be seen that in respect of Buddha the griha of Neecha Bhanga is Saturn and effect is that Buddha who was a king in the material world had to become a Bhikshu and again elevated to be the position of a King in the spiritual world . Whereas in the case of Baba the Jupiter is the house of Makara which is responsible for Necha Bhanga and this has resulted in becoming not only a king spiritually but also a versatile genius in all material world. Thius achieving overall greatness is the unique nature of Neecha bhanga of Jupiter.
As stated earlier, it is not possible to interpret fully the greatness of Swami's horoscope even to the Serpant Anata with its thousand tongues ! We have only highlighted only some important aspects of the planetary position onl..….Further study of this as well as 'Amsakas' will reveal newer findings and definitions.
